NFL Draft 2020: League will stage draft remotely & use telethon to raise coronavirus cash

The NFL Draft will have a unique feeling to it this year with the event taking place remotely with teams making their picks and the top 58 prospects all appearing virtually.

The NFL Draft is the second biggest event in the league’s schedule after the Super Bowl with huge interest usually surrounding the selection of the best college players to the NFL.

Las Vegas was set to stage a memorable event on April 23-25, but with the coronavirus lockdown in operation, NFL commissioner Roger Goodell has announced that the draft will take place remotely, with teams making their choices via phone or video link.

"Because of these circumstances, clubs have been advised to prepare to conduct the 2020 Draft entirely outside of their facilities and in a fully virtual format, with club personnel in separate locations and able to communicate with one another and Draft headquarters by phone or internet,” said Goodell.

"We have reviewed this matter in the past few days with both the Competition Committee and CEC, and this will confirm that clubs will conduct their Draft operations remotely, with club personnel separately located in their homes."

The NFL has published the list of 58 players who will take part in the event liv via phone or video – including favourite to be first pick Joe Burrow.

The Louisiana State University quarterback won last season’s Heisman Trophy as the best college player of the year – and is backed to be picked by the Cincinnati Bengals with their first pick.

The Bengals will select first after finishing bottom of the pack last season, followed by the Washington Redskins, Detroit Lions, New York Giants and the Miami Dolphins.

Burrow’s college LSU will have the most players involved in the draft with eight ahead of the University of Alabama's seven.

The NFL have also announced that the Draft will also act as a telethon to raise money to fight the coronavirus pandemic.
