Julian Edelman agreeds new Patriots deal

Julian Edelman has agreed a new two-year contract extension with the New England Patriots.

The new deal will see the wide receiver remain at the Patriots until the end of the 2019 season.

Edelman had been preparing to enter the final year of his previous contract. His extension includes a $5m signing bonus and is worth up to $15m. Edelman can now earn a maximum of $19.5m over the next three seasons.

The 31-year-old provided one of the stand-out moments of Super Bowl LI, with his diving catch a signature play in their 34-28 comeback win over Atlanta Falcons.

Edelman has led the Patriots in catches in three of the past four seasons.

He finished the 2016 campaign with 98 catches for 1,106 yards, while he also has the fifth-highest total of receptions (356) in the NFL since the 2013 season.

Edelman's extension means Tom Brady, who is signed through 2019, will have his targets in New England for the foreseeable future. Tight end Rob Gronkowski and wide receiver Malcolm Mitchell are signed through 2019, while wide receivers Brandin Cooks and Chris Hogan are signed through 2018.
