Wrexham's return to the Sky Bet EFL was a miserable one as they were beaten 5-3 by MK Dons at the STōK Cae Ras.
An own goal from Eoghan O'Connell and Mohamed Eisa's strike fired the visitors into a 2-0 lead after just ten minutes, although that deficit was halved thanks to Jacob Mendy just before half-time.
Phil Parkinson's side couldn't build on that momentum though, as forward Jonathan Leko restored the two-goal advantage shortly after the restart.
Leko then got his second and MK's fourth 13 minutes later to secure the result, although the game still had plenty to offer in the closing exchanges.
Jordan Davies pulled the hosts to within two, albeit briefly as Daniel Harvie scored the away side's fifth in the fourth minute of added time. Anthony Forde's goal two minutes later made it 3-5.
Wrexham were joined by Notts County as both moved up a division following a thrilling National League title race, and the Magpies suffered a similar fate with a heavy defeat of their own.
They were beaten 5-1 by Sutton, with David McGoldrick's 69th minute goal reducing the gap from 4-0.
