West Ham v Tottenham: Our prediction

1pt under 2.5 total goals in West Ham v Spurs at 6/4 – Spurs to edge a potentially tough test in a low-scoring affair

Our David John writes... The West Ham board continue to ponder their next move over whether to retain manager Slaven Bilic and this is an excellent opportunity for the Croat to put forward his case for a renewed deal.

That said, the Hammers have not been given a great deal of hope by the layers at around the 7/1 mark as they try to apply some brakes to the Tottenham juggernaut.

However, a feisty London clash, four games without defeat and the fact they came within a whisker of pulling off a shock win earlier in the season at White Hart Lane suggests they won’t be a pushover.

There have been too many defensive horror shows from the hosts at the London Stadium to suggest snapping up the odds available but three clean sheets in the last four games is at last a very promising change in direction.“

We are in a good place now and look forward to the challenge,” said central defender Jose Fonte while the return in goal of Adrian has also added some stability after producing a couple of smart saves during the 0-0 draw at Stoke last week.

It was a lively display all told at the bet365 Stadium but still either lacked a crucial spark in front of goal or found Jack Butland in the way. The prospect of getting Andy Carroll back is tantalising yet there still has to be grave doubts if they are required to score a handful of times here to keep up.

It is nine straight Premier League wins for Spurs and they have the chance to turn the screw a little on Chelsea as victory would see them move to within one point before the latter take to the field on Monday.

They swarmed all over Arsenal last weekend to claim the north London bragging rights this season and were more than happy to add to the current woes of their closest rival.

Maurico Pochettino and his side seem to be thoroughly enjoying the title pursuit and there have been very few signs of tension as push now comes to shove over the closing weeks.

Manchester United at home are up next but to me this looks the trickiest of Spurs’ remaining fixtures in a hostile, ramped-up derby atmosphere.

It will be by far the toughest test as well for an improving West Ham defence but I am prepared to take a punt on the home side at least keeping things respectable with a wager on under 2.5 total goals.

Predcition: West Ham 0-1 Tottenham

West Ham v Tottenham: Manager quotes

Slaven Bilic (West Ham)

On Tottenham: "They are buying really good players and they built a really good team.

"It's a good question, because we can't look at Man City or Chelsea or Man United, or watch European football every week and say 'yeah we want him'.

"We have to do it with a limited budget and Spurs have shown us - either because they were lucky or they had great scouts - that what they are doing is the way."

On Tottenham playing at Wembley next season: "I don't know if they will have the same problems (as West Ham playing at the London Stadium) but I wouldn't be surprised.

"It is going to be very hard for them to replicate that atmosphere at White Hart Lane, where everywhere you turn you are close to the stands - and at Wembley they have already felt it this season in the Champions League.

"Although the pitch may be the same, it is a totally different perception. And the perception is the key.

"We needed a few games to get used to it. Of course victories would reduce the time, but after defeats it's hard to say it's not important. We needed a lot of time."

On trying to confirm West Ham's place in the Premier League: "This is a big match anyway.

"It is a derby, whether you need the points or not, it's a derby game against Spurs at our stadium.

"They need points, we need points, so it is massive game for us and a massive game for them. We will try to get the points that will mathematically secure our status.

"You don't need extra motivation when you play against Tottenham. Last season's game at Upton Park, when we beat them 1-0, was one of the most electrifying atmospheres.

"It is a big game for us, a big game for the supporters, it is under the lights which is always a special one, and we are ready for it."

On the title race: "I have nothing but praise for Chelsea, I have great respect for them to make the gap they have.

"Don't get me wrong, Chelsea deserve to be on top, but Spurs are playing maybe the best football.

"Spurs have been in good form for the past couple of months and are playing good. But we have to be positive.

"We are four games unbeaten and have three cleans sheets as well. Our form has improved and we are positive and optimistic."

Mauricio Pochettino (Tottenham)

On transfer plans: "We want to move the club to the last level.

"At the moment if we are capable of moving the club in the next few years to the last level you will see maybe the rumours will stop because when you compare Tottenham to - I don't know I want to be very respectful - to Manchester United or this type of club, you do not see the same sort of rumours as down here.

"Why? I think you know and we know, it is not a moment to talk but that is the situation. The real situation is we are working so hard.

"I try to explain to you that there is a lot of pride, because he (Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy) is the first who is creating a massive club for us and the fans because he is thinking to move in the next few years the club into the last level.

"And then of course in our signings we are creating a new team that in the new stadium and with the new facilities Tottenham will be one of the best teams in the world."

On speculation about Kyle Walker's future: "All 21 players are focused to help achieve the things we want to achieve.

"I am so calm. The players are calm. They know what happens inside.

"It's important that the fans know that the players are calm and we will see at the end of the season whether the rumours are true or not."

Asked about Walker's absence against Arsenal and Chelsea, Pochettino said: "For me every game is big. Crystal Palace was big. Swansea was a big game."

He continued: "When you have players that deserve to play and play, then all players feel an important part of the team.

"The rotation between Danny Rose and Ben Davies, or Kyle and Trippier, you can see their performances. It's because we have good players in the squad that it affects their team-mates and makes them better."

Walker is one of a number of players to have been linked with moves away from Tottenham but Pochettino said nothing will be decided until the summer.

"No decision until the end of the season about anything," Pochettino said.

"I accept the business but please, I think our fans don't care.

"It's true that Tottenham are a trending topic in all the rumours - we are champions. In the last two seasons (for rumours) we are more than first."

West Ham v Tottenham: Opta facts

West Ham have picked up just one win from their last five Premier League meetings with Spurs (D1 L3), however it did come in this fixture last season (1-0 at Upton Park).

Spurs will have the chance to achieve a league double over West Ham for the first time since 2012/13, in what was Andre Villas-Boas’ only full season at the club.

The Hammers, meanwhile, could win back-to-back home games against Spurs in consecutive seasons for the first time since 1998/99 and 1999/00.

Harry Kane has netted five times in his last five Premier League games against West Ham, although each of them have come in games at White Hart Lane.

Kane has scored 19 goals in 26 Premier League derbies (0.73 goals per game), compared to 51 goals in 83 apps against non-London opposition for Spurs (0.61 goals per game).

The England striker has 18 goals in his last 20 Premier League appearances against opposition from London.

West Ham’s Manuel Lanzini has scored 13 Premier League goals; eight of which have come in 13 London derby appearances (62%).

After overseeing wins in four of his first five Premier League games against London opposition, West Ham boss Slaven Bilic has won just two of 10 since (D3 L5).

Between them, Harry Kane and Dele Alli have 38 Premier League goals. This is the most by a Spurs duo in a Premier League season since 1994/95 (also 38 - Klinsmann 20 and Sheringham 18).

A win for Tottenham will see them record their most wins a league campaign since 1966/67 (24).

Spurs have won nine consecutive league games for the first time since October 1960, when they won 13 in a row.

Since the start of last season, Tottenham have collected 147 points in the Premier League; 15 more than any other team in this period. They have also scored the most goals in this timeframe (140).

West Ham v Tottenham: Sky Bet odds

Tottenham are Sky Bet’s 2/5 favourites of Friday night, with West Ham up against odds of 6/1 while the draw is priced at 19/5. Mauricio Pochettino’s men are, however, up against the odds themselves to win the Premier League, drifting from 6/1 to 10/1 after failing to gain ground on Chelsea last weekend. Harry Kane heads the first goalscorer betting at 5/2 and is enhanced from 5/1 to 7/1 to net from outsider the area in Sky Bet’s Price Boosts, while Andy Carroll is considered the hosts’ main threat at 8/1 to break the deadlock.
