Lionel Messi scores his 40th goal of the season to create more history

Another weekend, another remarkable record for Lionel Messi as he scores his 40th and 41st goals of the season - making it 10 years running in which he's passed the 40 mark.

Messi scored both goals as Barcelona beat rivals Espanyol to move 13 points clear at the top of La Liga, but not for the first time the real significance came in the form of another remarkable personal milestone.

Not only did that make it 10 seasons in succession in which he's scored 40 or more, but Messi also drew level with former Real Madrid goalkeeper Iker Casillas for La Liga wins - 334 in total.

The Argentinian broke the deadlock in the 71st minute when his chipped free-kick attempt from the edge of the box was helped over the line by back-tracking Espanyol defender Victor Sanchez.

Messi, who had been an injury doubt for the game, then turned in a cross from substitute Malcom to seal a 2-0 victory for Barcelona after 89 minutes.
