Notts County, one of the founding members of the Football League and the longest serving EFL club, will play in the non-league for the first time in their history as they lost 2-1 to Swindon, while Macclesfield secured a point with Cambridge.

County needed to win their final game and hope Macclesfield, who started the day two points above them, lost in order to survive and at one point in the second half they were doing just that.

With Macclesfield losing 1-0, a Kane Hemmings' penalty on 52 minutes had County leading and staying up. However that lasted just 10 minutes as Elliott Durrell equalised for Sol Campbell's Macclesfield against Cambridge.

County's last hope was squeezed out just minutes later as they firstly conceded an equaliser to Swindon's Kaiyne Woolery on 69 minutes, before slipping behind to a Theo Robinson strike just four minutes later.

Robinson's second goal in injury time confirmed the East Midland's fate ending their 131-year stay in the Sky Bet EFL, after a miserable season that has witnessed three managerial changes.

While was tears for Notts County, it was joy for Macclesfield, who celebrated a remarkable escape. The Cheshire club were bottom of Sky Bet League Two and seven points adrift from safety when former England defender Campbell took over in November.

But eight league wins helped them finish third bottom, and three above County, who join Yeovil in the National League.

At the other end of the table, MK Dons were victorious in the winner-takes-all shootout against automatic promotion rivals Mansfield with a 1-0 win.

Mansfield went into the game knowing a draw was good enough to see them promoted ahead of The Dons, but the home side took just two minutes to take the lead as David Wheeler headed home and they managed to hang on for the reminder of the game to secure an immediate return to Sky Bet League One.

In the fight for the final play-off place, Newport County saw off four other sides to claim seventh place thanks to a late goal in their 1-1 draw at Morecambe.

Newport started the day as favourites to earn that position, knowing a win over Morecambe would seal seventh spot regardless of other results, but a loss would open it up to another four sides.

And for a long time it looked as though Michael Flynn's side has blown it, as they trailed Morecambe 1-0 after 20 minutes through Aaron Collins' strike.

At that point it meant Colchester United had jumped into the final spot thanks to their 3-0 hammering of champions Lincoln City, with a Brennan Dickenson goal and a brace from Sammie Szmodics. However a Jamille Matt equaliser on 87 minutes for Newport ensured they extended their season, finishing a point ahead of the U's.

Exeter will be the most frustrated side of the day, as victory over Forest Green, who were resting players ahead of their play-off campaign, would have secured them a top seven finish. But they failed to fire when it matter most and a 0-0 draw meant last year's beaten play-off finalist finished two places and a point outside of the top seven.

Tranmere will be in the play-offs but they lost 3-1 at Crawley, who led at half-time through goals from Ashley Nathaniel-George and Filipe Morais. James Norwood' penalty reduced Rovers deficit but Panutche Camara completed the scoring late on.

Joe Martin and Jordan Gibson scored in Stevenage's 2-0 home win against Cheltenham while Grimsby were also 2-0 winners against Crewe, with Harry Davis and Joe Grayson on the scoresheet.

Northampton rounded off their season in style with a 5-2 success at Oldham, who led through Johan Branger's strike. However, Sam Hoskins, Aaron Pierre and a Andy Williams brace turned the game in the Cobblers' favour

Callum Lang got another one for Oldham before substitute Junior Morias struck late on for Northampton.

Promoted Bury drew 1-1 at home against Port Vale as Jordan Rossiter cancelled out Tom Pope's opening goal while it finished goalless between Yeovil against Carlisle.
