Manchester United made some moves on deadline day, signing Edinson Cavani on a free transfer and Brazilian left-back Alex Telles from Porto for a fee of around £14m.
United fans had been desperate to sign Jadon Sancho all summer long, but while that was never likely to happen on deadline day, the club did at least manage a few signings.
Experienced Uruguay striker Cavani arrives on a free transfer following his release from Paris St Germain over the summer, signing a one-year deal with the option of a second.
Cavani has won the Golden Boot in both Ligue 1 and Serie A.
He said on the club website: “Manchester United is one of the greatest clubs in the world, so it is a real honour to be here. I’ve worked really hard during the time off and I feel eager to compete and represent this incredible club.
“I have played in front of some of the most passionate supporters in football during my career and I know that it will be the same in Manchester. I cannot wait to experience the Old Trafford atmosphere, when it is safe for the fans to return.
“I look forward to continuing to write my little story inside the book of football and I know that’s why my focus has to remain the same as always – work, work, work. I have had a conversation with the manager and this has increased my desire to wear this beautiful shirt.”
Solskjaer said: “Edinson is an experienced ultimate professional who always gives everything for his team. His goalscoring record for club and country is fantastic and we are delighted to sign a player of his calibre.
“He’ll bring energy, power, leadership and a great mentality to the squad but, most importantly, he’ll bring goals.
“He has had a brilliant career so far, winning trophies at almost every club he has played for, and he still has so much more to give at the highest level.
“The opportunity for our young players to learn from one of Europe’s top goalscorers over the last 10 years is fantastic and it will really benefit them going forward.
“Edinson knows exactly what it takes to succeed and we are all looking forward to seeing him make an impact at Manchester United.”
Man Utd complete Telles deal
After a lot of discussions between Porto and United a deal was finally agreed for Telles, who signed a four-year contract at Old Trafford.
It is understood a fee of £13.5million, plus £1.8million in potential add-ons, had been agreed with the Portuguese club over the weekend for the left-back, whose deal includes the option to extend for a further year.
He said on the club website: “To join a club with the prestige of Manchester United is a huge honour.
“You have to work hard to get to this moment in your career and now I am coming to this club, I can promise that I will give everything in my heart to be a success here.”
Telles, who has won league titles among a number of honours at both Porto and Turkish side Galatasaray, added: “I won many trophies at FC Porto and I want to continue that at United.
“The manager has a clear plan and direction for this team and I can’t wait to pull on the famous shirt.”
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer said: “First and foremost, I welcome Alex to United. He is a player we have been tracking for some time and his performances over the past few years are exactly what we are looking for.
“He is a fighter and a winner and will add real determination and competition to the squad.
“Alex has the qualities, both as a player and as a person, that we want here at Manchester United.”
Pellistri makes five
United added a fifth signing of the day when they announced the arrival of 18-year-old Uruguayan winger Facundo Pellistri.
Pellistri has signed a five-year deal after completing a move for a fee understood to be 10million euros (£9m) from Penarol in his home country.
“To join a club with the history of Manchester United is a dream come true,” he said.
“I have learnt a lot at Penarol and I would like to thank them for everything they have done for me. To have the confidence of the manager is an amazing feeling and I know that working with him will be perfect for my development.
“I am coming into a squad full of great players who I will learn from every day. Everyone knows that Manchester United is a club that gives young players an opportunity and I am ready to work hard every day to earn those chances and prove myself in England.”
