Swansea City v Stoke City: Our prediction
David John says: A promising start from Paul Clement at the helm for Swansea is turning into a bigger nightmare by the week and he has labelled this fixture as not only ‘must-win’ but the biggest game in years for the hosts.
He admits his players have not responded well to the pressure of a relegation battled with flat performances against West Ham and Watford so I wonder what his thinking is behind placing so much emphasis on this outing?
Both the above fixtures finished 1-0 so not a great deal more would have been needed to take something from them in all honesty.
The excellent Alfie Mawson’s horror mistake to gift Etienne Capoue a winner last week has been the last six weeks in a nutshell and probably adds credence to the old wives tale about being punished for every little mistake when you are at the bottom of the table.
Swansea have been priced up at around the 5/4 mark and that looks pretty skinny for a team in their predicament, but Stoke are the ideal type of opponent to try and restore some confidence.
It is just about job done for the Potters after a 3-1 success over Hull ended a barren spell of four defeats on the spin to leave them on a handy 39 points.
There are some very talented players under the leadership of Mark Hughes but they remain frustratingly hit and miss and well capable of luring punters in to erroneously supporting them on the back of a decent display.
They were making heavy weather of beating the Tigers but two inspired substitutions worked the oracle and I get the feeling Hughes himself sometimes does not know quite what he will get.
So I am going to take a punt on the home side to respond in a positive manner to Clement’s battle cry – Mawson will be fired-up to make amends while it is high time Gylfi Sigurdsson and Fernando Lorente stood up and were counted.
Prediction: Swansea 2-0 Stoke
Swansea City v Stoke City: Team news
Wayne Routledge misses Swansea's Premier League home game against Stoke with a hernia problem which may require surgery.
Jack Cork is also absent again with an ankle injury, and a reshaped midfield is likely to see either club captain Leon Britton or Tom Carroll get the nod over Jay Fulton after last weekend's 1-0 defeat at Watford.
Relegation-threatened Swansea will make a late decision on top scorer Fernando Llorente, who has been troubled by ankle and leg injuries in recent weeks, with Jordan Ayew standing by.
Stoke boss Mark Hughes is hopeful of having midfield duo Joe Allen and Glenn Whelan back available for the Premier League clash with Swansea at the Liberty Stadium.
Allen, an ex-Swans player, and Whelan have trained this week after missing the victory over Hull last weekend due to a hamstring problem and virus respectively. Forward Jon Walters' knee issue is being monitored, but he should be fine to be involved.
Fit-again goalkeeper Jack Butland was an unused substitute against Hull, returning to the matchday squad for the first time in over a year, and Hughes has said there is "a possibility" he will play in the Swansea game.

Swansea City v Stoke City: Manager quotes
Paul Clement (Swansea City)
Asked if Swansea have the appetite to win their survival battle: "100 per cent. I've seen the players battling and going hammer and tongs in training this week.
"They know how important the Stoke game is and what is needed. The intensity in training has been there. If I had seen something different in terms of mood - flat or lack of belief - I would be worried. But I am not.
"I know there has been frustration from the fans, but I have seen some positive signs. We all have the belief we will stay up.
"The fact that Hull are at home to Watford, a game I believe they will win, means Stoke is a must-win game for us.
"As we stand, it is out of our hands. If us and Hull win all our remaining five games - which is a big task - there is nothing we can do. But it is unlikely we will both win every game.
"I think we are going to need three wins and maybe another point (to survive), and we have still got to hope they falter."
On Swansea's slide after overseeing such a dramatic turnaround at the start of his tenure: "Myself, the staff and the players have looked a lot at all the games that have gone by. The process has been the same as when we were winning games.
"It is a complex situation and the problems are not easy to resolve. The players have not responded particularly well over last five or six games when the pressure has been there.
"But I have reinforced this point that we have to play under this pressure. Because if we keep performing the way we are the pressure will be gone in those last two or three games."
Mark Hughes (Stoke City)
Asked about the decision to withdraw Saido Berahino and the crowd reaction in the last game: "My interpretation is that a number of people didn't agree with my decision to take him off. I just felt we needed to change our approach.
"My view was that Jon and Peter would give the opposition a different problem. You want your subs to have an impact and you have to say they did.
"It wasn't a reflection on how Saido was playing - far from it, because I thought he had one of his more effective games. But I just thought we had got to a point in the game where we needed to change things around.
"I think everybody can see he is getting stronger. He needs a goal, which is what all strikers need, just to settle into a club. He's been close in recent weeks and it's only a matter of time.
"He will score goals before the end of the season, we are convinced of that - and even if he doesn't he is going to be in great shape for next year.
"We were always of the view that next season would be when he could really hit the ground running, with a full pre-season behind him.
"But we've been really pleased with what he has produced up to this point and he is continuing to progress. He will probably be disappointed when the season ends, because he's only just starting to get going."
