Sunderland v Burnley:  Team news

Sunderland have suffered a blow ahead of their crucial Premier League clash with Burnley with the news that defender Jan Kirchhoff has been ruled out for at least another four weeks.

Kirchhoff had been set to return to the Black Cats squad after three months out with hamstring and knee injuries, but suffered a bad reaction after an Under-23 game against Manchester United.

Jason Denayer returns after being ruled out against his parent club Manchester City, but Steven Pienaar remains a doubt as he struggles to shake off a calf injury.

Steven Defour is unlikely to be fit for Burnley as the Clarets go in search of their long-awaited first away win of the season.

The Belgium international continued his recovery from a hamstring strain by playing 70 minutes of a midweek friendly, but he is short of match fitness and unlikely to be risked.

Johann Berg Gudmundsson is still out with a medial ligament injury and joins long-term absentee Dean Marney (also knee) on the sidelines.

Sunderland v Burnley: Manager quotes

David Moyes (Sunderland)

On Jermain Defoe's England call-up: "I think it's a boost to Jermain and hopefully it gives the whole club a lift because we need his goals and we need more goals.

"It's less and less likely that older players get call-ups when they've been out of the team for a while. You get players like Steven Gerrard and Wayne Rooney who play right through to their mid-thirties, but when you've been out of the squad, it shows your professionalism in never giving up on it."

On Jan Kirchhoff: "Jan has unfortunately had a recurrence of his knee problem and it looks like it is going to keep him out for a minimum of four weeks.

"I don't think there is any damage, but it is going to take longer than we thought to heal."

On Burnley and the challenge ahead: "They have been tough opponents for a lot of teams. Their away form has been mentioned but they have had a really solid season - they're a tough team to play against and they make it difficult for you.

"I think sometimes you've got to say yes, it's a really important game, but for us there's other games to come as well.

"The supporters have always been important but they've been in this position before so they're used to it, and many of the players are used to it as well. They've used their experience in the past, so let's hope they can do it again."

Sean Dyche (Burnley)

On the home fans' expectations: "There will be a bigger expectation at their place because their fans will see it as 'you've got to beat them' - it's not mind games, I'm just trying to see how fans think.

"A couple of Liverpool fans told me it was very rare to see a Liverpool side trying to kill the game last week so I think that's a back-handed mark of respect for us, considering we haven't won away.

"The energy was good and some of the quality, so although we haven't won away there are strong signs of what we can do - but we have to add to that because factually we still haven't won a game."

On Burnley's improvement since their last Premier League season: "I think there is more experience for myself and the team - I think there's an openness to the challenge and there's certainly no over-thinking it.

"I think there's a nice balance to the thrill of being in the Premier League, but the calmness of knowing that you've got to deliver week in, week out, and there's still work to be done.

"There's a clarity to it - we know that nothing's a given, and we've got to continue to earn the right to stay in the Premier League on an ongoing basis."

On Tom Heaton and Michael Keane being part of the England squad: "I think it's a really good sign - the difference with Tom and Keano is that the culture and environment here has added to their pathway to international level.

"They have been here long enough to mature with the team with a good thing for us and for them. Both have been fantastic with what they've done for us and now we'll see what they do on international duty."

Sunderland v Burnley: Our prediction

Our David John writes... Burnley were excellent again at Liverpool and their testing spell of four away games on the trot comes to a close this weekend with a good chance to finally claim the away success which has eluded them.

They are a best price of 2/1 to finally scramble across the line and it has reached the stage of the season where desperation should be replaced by determination in the quest considering their relatively healthy current league position.

It is a different mentality, but they put in a good shift in the FA Cup clash on Wearside in January to force a 0-0 draw and performances have certainly improved on the road since then culminating in giving Liverpool plenty to think about at Anfield.

The Black Cats are bottom and six points from safety after three defeats followed the one recent ray of light when they swept aside Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park at the beginning of last month.

The club seems happy to retain the faith in David Moyes despite just five victories and a two-week hiatus since the 2-0 home defeat to Manchester City might prove handy as the Scot once more tries to get them on the right track.

A lively start and finish against City was promising but the bit in the middle still needs major work while the return in goal of Jordan Pickford will boost their prospects of keeping the back door shut – his tussle with in-form Andre Gray should be very good.

Moyes never seems to lose faith in his players and they will keep plugging away while recent England call-up Jermain Defoe should feel in the mood – it all adds up to another stalemate.

Prediction: Sunderland 1-1 Burnley

Indeed, Burnley have yet to lose to Sunderland in their three meetings this season, winning two and drawing the other.

The Black Cats have won five and lost none of their last eight home games against Burnley in all competitions. In fact, Burnley’s last win away at Sunderland arrived in the aforementioned 1978/79 season.

Jermain Defoe has scored in his last two Premier League appearances against Burnley.

Defoe has scored in every month of Premier League action between January 2016 and February 2017 (12 successive months) but is yet to score in March 2017.

Andre Gray is the only Burnley player to score a hat-trick in Premier League history; after he bagged three against Sunderland earlier this season.

Burnley have only ever won one Premier League game in the month of March (P10 W1 D1 L8) and have a worse points per game ratio in this month than any other side in the history of the competition (0.40).

Burnley have the worst away record in the Premier League this season; winning just two points from 42 available (W0 D2 L12).

Sunderland have allowed their opponents 99 shots on target more (176) than they have attempted themselves (77) this season in the Premier League; the biggest differential in the league.
