Macclesfield Town: EFL charges Sky Bet League Two club over late wages

Financially-stricken Sky Bet League Two club Macclesfield Town have been hit with further EFL misconduct charges over the late payment of wages.

Macclesfield have already been deducted a total of 11 points this season for various offences, including late wage payments.

A previous sanction included a suspended two-point penalty.

They are currently just three points above bottom club Stevenage, who have a game in hand, but as things stand no teams are expected to be relegated from League Two this season.

One space needs to be filled because of Bury's expulsion from the League in August 2019.

EFL clubs will vote on a final framework to end the season on June 8.

An EFL statement read: “Macclesfield Town has been issued with further misconduct charges for alleged breaches of EFL Regulations and will “be referred to an Independent Disciplinary Commission.

“The club has been charged with failing to pay a number of players on the applicable payment dates due in March 2020, whilst also failing to act with utmost good faith in respect of matters with the EFL and for breaching an order, requirement, direction or instruction of the league."

A Macclesfield Town statement read: "Macclesfield Town can confirm that notification has been received from the English Football League, which charges the Club with further regulation breaches - all of which are relating to the payment of salaries due at the end of March 2020.

"The Club are deeply surprised by these charges, as the Arbitration Panel at our last hearing adjudicated the following after close examination of all the relevant evidence -

"Macclesfield Town will understandably be appealing these charges vehemently and will provide a further update in due course."
