Leeds United close in on deal for Real Sociedad and Spain defender Diego Llorente

Leeds are closing in on the signing of another Spain international with advanced talks ongoing for Real Sociedad defender Diego Llorente.

Marcelo Bielsa has already added forward Rodrigo to his side but is targeting another centre-back and multiple reports say that a move is likely to be completed in the coming days.

The West Yorkshire club pushed to sign Brighton defender Ben White on a permanent basis following a successful loan spell last season but found their final offer of £25million turned down.

Instead, Leeds added Robin Koch, a German international, from Freiburg and he has started both of their Premier League contests so far.

They remain on the hunt for another centre-back though after Gaetano Berardi, who was the third choice centre-back last season, departed in the summer following the expiration of his contract. He is also sidelined with a long-term injury picked up in their 3-1 win at Derby.

A deal for Llorente, who was in the Spain squad for the last round of international fixtures, is expected to cost near £20million. Leeds had originally targeted Dinamo Zagreb’s Josko Gvardiol but Bundesliga side RB Leipzig have won the race for his signature.

Llorente started Sociedad's 1-1 draw with Real Valladolid at the beginning of the season but dropped down to the bench for their recent 0-0 result against Real Madrid. The 27-year-old, who can play in defensive midfield when required, featured in 29 LaLiga games last season - scoring one goal in the 2-1 win over Villarreal.

The Whites have also identified Atlanta midfielder Ruslan Malinovskyi as a target, with a move for Udinese's Rodrigo De Paul becoming increasingly unlikely. Manchester United winger Daniel James is also on the shortlist - the second time Leeds have looked at signing him following the collapse of his deadline day move from Swansea in 2019.
