Benevento's 14-game losing run in Serie A came to an end on Sunday - thanks to a stoppage-time header by their keeper.
The newly-promoted side had failed to earn a point in their opening 14 games in Serie A and heading into injury time against AC Milan that run looked set to extend to 15.
However, when the hosts were awarded a 95th-minute free kick to the left of the penalty area, keeper Alberto Brignoli came up and duly scored with a magnificent diving header to spark scenes of joy at the Stadio Ciro Vigorito, a ground supposedly the subject of a witches' curse which has been blamed in some quarters for their awful start to the season.
The draw had hit 80/1 with Sky Bet prior to that effort and the goal took down many accumulators with Milan having been the 10th-best-backed team on Sunday's coupon.
Giacomo Bonaventura had given Milan a first-half lead only for George Puscas to equalise.
Still, Nikola Kalinic's 57th-minute header had looked set to extend Benevento's misery, although the home side were given hope when Milan's Alessio Romagnoli was sent off with 15 minutes remaining for a second yellow card.
Pressure was duly applied and it finally paid off in spectacular fashion, Brignoli - on loan from Juventus - heading in from Danilo Cataldi's delivery.
It was hardly a good start for new Milan boss Gennaro Gattuso, whose side end the weekend seventh in the table - 16 points outside the top three.
The new boss described conceding the last-gasp equaliser as worse than being stabbed.
Gattuso, who replaced the sacked Vincenzo Montella at San Siro last week, said on Sky Sport Italia: "It burns, it hurts, it would have been preferable to be stabbed.
"I never expected to concede a goal to the goalkeeper in the 94th minute."
Brignoli dedicated his goal, which ended a run of 14 successive defeats, to everyone associated with the club.
"I don't believe it," he said. "It is so difficult to score in a situation like that.
"I'm happy for everyone, for the president who never said a word out of place, for the fans who are living a dream and who certainly expected something better.
"I heard someone say, 'Get on, get in,' so I went to the area to jump and I closed my eyes. It was an instinctive act.
"I jumped like a goalkeeper and not a striker. We have lost so many times in 90 minutes. For once, after months of sacrifice, we've done it."
Meanwhile city rivals Inter Milan took full advantage of their rivals' continued slip-ups by taking over at the top of the table with a 5-0 win over Chievo.
Ivan Perisic scored a hat-trick for Inter, opening the scoring in the 23rd minute before Mauro Icardi doubled his side's advantage before half-time.
Perisic added his second on 57 minutes and after a Milan Skriniar header, the Croatian completed his hat-trick when he poked home a loose ball in injury time.
