Brighton manager Chris Hughton and chairman Tony Bloom have become freemen of the city after guiding the Seagulls into the Premier League for the first time.
The duo were honoured at a ceremony at Brighton Town Hall on Thursday afternoon.
Speaking at the meeting, which was screened live on the council's website, Hughton said: "This is a hugely emotional day for me and my family. It's certainly something that we didn't expect.
"I wouldn't have been able to do the job that I've been given the opportunity to do without the incredible support that I've had from our chairman and of course the board of directors.
"It's something that is very humbling for me, particularly for somebody that's only been in the area for just under two-and-a-half years."
