Rising Pune Supergiant v Mumbai Indians: Indian Premier League

Rising Pune Supergiant won by seven wickets

Mumbai Indians (20 overs): 184-8 (Buttler 38; Tahir 3-28)

Rising Pune Supergiant (19.5 overs): 187-3 (Smith 84*, Rahane 60)

Ben Stokes tasted victory on his Indian Premier League debut, though the competition's most expensive foreign player played a supporting role as Rising Pune Supergiant defeated Jos Buttler's Mumbai Indians by seven wickets.

Stokes, purchased for a record-breaking £1.7million in February's auction, returned figures of one for 36 with the ball, and was struck for four maximums in the process, two of which were scored off back-to-back deliveries by Buttler en route to his 38.

Stokes then contributed 21 off 14 with the bat to supplement half-centuries from Ajinkya Rahane and RPS captain Steve Smith - the former making 60 and the latter carrying his bat with a brilliant 84 in his team's 187 for three as they chased down Mumbai's 184 for eight with one ball remaining.

Buttler had dispatched one Stokes delivery over long-on for six before following that up with a patented scoop for the same result, and he looked well set on 38 when he was given out lbw to Imran Tahir despite replays showing there was a big inside edge onto the Englishman's pads.

Stokes had begun to find his rhythm too alongside Smith in RPS' reply but his knock was ended when he dragged a Hardik Pandya ball from outside off stump into Tim Southee's hands on the leg-side fence.
