David Massey steers today's Punting Pointers through Wednesday's action and he has three selections.
Racing betting tips: Wednesday April 8
1pt win J Street in the 14:57 Nottingham at 4/1 (General, min 7/2)
1pt win Any Which Way in the 15:32 Nottingham at 5/2 (General, min 5/2)
1pt win Louie The Legend in the 16:07 Nottingham at 7/1 (888Sport, min 6/1)
14:57 Nottingham – Class 5 (0-70) Handicap 5f
J STREET hasn’t been with Mick & David Easterby long and very much caught the eye on her return to turf at Doncaster last time, finishing 2½ lengths sixth of 17 to Spoof, but sure to have finished much closer but for having her run interrupted at a crucial point. She is lightly raced for her age and looks to be getting her act together on that showing, so looks worth backing to defy a mark of 69. This race is slightly weaker than the one she tackled at Doncaster, and she won’t get many better chances to win a handicap.
Spendmore Lane is another who was better than the result last time, rearing as the stalls opened at Chelmsford a month ago and doing well to finish 1¾ lengths third of 5 to Tyger Bay in the circumstances. A big run would come as no surprise and Dave Loughnane’s charge appeals as the main danger to the selection.
15:32 Nottingham – Class 5 (0-70) Handicap 1m2f50y
Extraterrestrial heads the market here but looks opposable given he failed to improve on his handicap debut at Wolverhampton last time despite being able to dictate terms from the front, I doubt the surface was the issue as he’d run well at Kempton on his final qualifying run, although it’s possible that a switch to turf will bring the improvement he promised on that occasion. The fitting of a visor will be taken as a positive by some, but the last four from this yard to sport the visor first time have been unplaced, and there must be value against him.
Five wins and two seconds from his last ten runners shows the wellbeing of the Michael Bell string, and I think he can win this with handicap debutant ANY WHICH WAY, who showed much his best form when a fair fifth at Bath on good ground in the autumn. As is his wont, Bell gave the son of Almanzor three quick runs to qualify for handicaps and he looked green on each, but the Bath race has worked out well, with three of those to beat him winning next time, and it’s clear that he will be better on turf than the all-weather, showing less at Southwell on his final start, albeit with a drop to 7f no good to him on pedigree.
An opening mark of 68 is there to be plundered and being out of a mare who won at 1½m and stayed further, he is likely to improve markedly for the step up to middle-distances this season, making him an attractive proposition for a stable in such good form.
16:07 Nottingham – Class 6 (0-65) Handicap 1m75y
LOUIE THE LEGEND ran his best races here last year, winning over C&D from a mark of 64 and beaten narrowly later in the season off 63. He returns to action having slipped back to a mark of 63 and is further aided by Jack Callan claiming a further 5lb off his back in this moderate handicap.
Fitness will not be a concern for Louie The Legend as he has raced several times over hurdles since last seen on the flat, and while those runs can be viewed as disappointing, he has simply failed to stay two miles, which is hardly a surprise for a horse whose best form on the level has come at a mile. He looks on a winnable mark and we know he tends to save his best efforts for Nottingham, so appears to have strong claims back at his ideal trip.
