A review of the action from Brighton on Friday as the Richard Hughes-trained Goodwood Crusader landed a hat-trick.
It is often said patience is a virtue and trainer Richard Hughes can testify to that after Goodwood Crusader completed a hat-trick of wins in the Kew Electrical Handicap at Brighton.
Having left the Lambourn handler scratching his head on numerous occasions, the son of Sir Prancealot continued his revival - and blossoming relationship with 7lb claimer Finley Marsh - after coming from well adrift to take the six-furlong contest by a length and a quarter.
Hughes said of the 6/1 winner: "It didn't seem like the jockeys were really pushing and all of a sudden he was 100 yards behind, but he (Marsh) knew the pace they were going.
"This little horse has really improved. It took him a while to win and he was beaten several times off lower marks. He was beaten in a 0-65 at Wolverhampton and finished second-last and we were all down in the dumps, then all of a sudden he has just turned a corner.
"I think a bit of confidence has helped. They know when they have won. I had him in at Goodwood on Sunday, but decided to come here as the ground was a bit better."
Billy Dylan earned a late call up to Richard Hannon's team for Royal Ascot after hitting the target in the nexere.com Novice Stakes.
Sixth on his debut in a warm maiden at Newbury, the son of Excelebration put that experience to good use in the extended five-furlong prize, running out a ready length and a half winner as the 11/8 favourite.
Hannon said: "We always really liked him and we fancied him a bit at Newbury, but he needed the run and didn't pick up in the ground. That race is always a very strong maiden.
"I was very impressed with the way he won today, I thought he would go very close. He travelled so well last time we thought the five furlongs would probably suit him.
"We will probably make an entry in the Norfolk Stakes and the Windsor Castle and go from there."
While a spell over hurdles at the back-end of last year may not have been fruitful for one for Black Caesar, trainer Philip Hide believes it has been the catalyst behind his improved displays on the Flat after he took his second victory of the year in the Motorclean Ltd Handicap.
The Findon handler said of the 11/4 winner: "He has been a model of consistency since running at Plumpton over hurdles. He loved jumping hurdles at home but when he got to the track it was a complete disaster. It was X-rated stuff.
"He is a lovely old horse and I'm very fond of him. It is great to see him win and he is definitely in a good place. I think we have learnt how to train him properly now. Whether he gets back up to being an 80-rated horse, I don't know, but he is a good fun horse for the owners."
Champion jockey Jim Crowley made his visit to the Sussex track before dashing off to ride at Goodwood a successful one when steering the Owen Burrows-trained Quloob to a facile eight-length success in the routemobile.com Handicap.
Crowley said of the 100/30 winner "He has done it nicely and has obviously improved going up in trip (mile and a half). He has got a high cruising speed and just keeps going. I think he will get further than this as he was not stopping."
The old adage 'horses for courses' certainly applies to Miss Inga Sock (2/1) and the Eve Johnson Houghton-trained five-year-old made it three wins from four starts at the course when holding on by a neck in the Route Mobile Handicap.
Galinthias (6/1) from the yard of Simon Dow made it fifth time lucky when taking the Hacienda Classical 9 Sept Handicap, while the concluding Trailwalker 100km Challenge 29-30 July Handicap went the way of the John Bridger-trained Live Dangerously (11/2).
