Karis continues a fine romance as Mr Stunning roars back to form in Chairman's Sprint Prize

Mr Stunning lived up to his name and got FWD Champions Day off to a dynamic start in the sunshine at Sha Tin today with a thrilling success in the G1 Chairman's Sprint Prize.

Travel restrictions caused by the coronavirus crisis meant the £1.8m contest was an all hometown affair and, with champion sprinter Beat The Clock having been roughed off for the season, the market predicted a two-horse race between young pretender Aethero and the hitherto-consistent Hot King Prawn.

However, the leading fancies both blew out, leaving the Frankie Lor-trained veteran Mr Stunning to get the better of the former Tom Dascombe-trained Big Time Baby by three quarters of a length with Thanks Forever the same distance away in third.

Teetan has referred to his relationship with the Exceed And Excel gelding as "like a bad relationship with a girlfriend" after losing the ride on him several times since the combination made a winning debut at Happy Valley in 2016.

However, Mr Stunning was responsible for the Mauritian's first HK G1 triumph in the 2018 Hong Kong Sprint and the 29-year-old was less surprised than most at the way he battled home to give him his second at 20/1.

"He's been so good to me, this horse," he said. "Last time he got done out of the gate and still showed me that he's got the energy to give. I came back and told Frankie and the owner that he's an old fella but, I tell you, he still feels like a youngster underneath me.

"He's getting old, like we all get, but we got a nice jump and when he got a gap he just went shoot so all credit to him."

Teetan lined up for the first of three G1's full of confidence having won the two previous races and settled Mr Stunning in midfield as Aethero, pulling hard under Zac Purton, led Voyage Warrior and Hot King Prawn through an opening 400m of 23.23s.

Aethero dropped away tamely and was found to have bled from both nostrils and, with Hot King Prawn finding little when driven by Joao Moreira, any one of four or five horses could be given a chance with just over 200m to run.

Thanks Forever swept through from the rear to lead briefly under Blake Shinn soon after, while Big Time Baby battled on tenaciously with every chance for Matt Chadwick, but Mr Stunning threaded his way through powerfully on the inside and was going away close home as Teetan waved his whip in salute.

Expanding on his on-off relationship with the winner, Teetan added: "Before we broke up and 'she' moved out of the house - but now we are married so it's fine!"

Lor, who inherited Mr Stunning from his old boss in the summer of 2018, said: "He's seven now and he had a shoulder problem last season but this season he's been very close. I didn't think he could win but sometimes if the horse is fit then anything can happen."
