Trainer Emmet Mullins banned for ignoring Covid-19 protocols

Irish trainer Emmet Mullins has been banned from attending all racecourses for three months after breaking racing's Covid-19 protocols.

Mullins, a nephew of champion jumps trainer Willie, accepted he made a serious error of judgement when entering Leopardstown Racecourse on 14 June and was also fined €5,000 by the Irish Horse Racing Regulatory Board.

The 30-year-old, who trains in County Carlow, was told by the health-screening station at the track that he could not enter, but he still proceeded into the course and went on to ignore three further requests to leave the course.

Mullins said he had entered the course as he feared his groom would struggle to manage runner Oriental Eagle on his own.

Mullins will not appeal the ban and asked for his fine to be donated to key and frontline workers who continue to battle coronavirus.

The trainer will still be allowed to enter runners during the next three months.
