Paddy's Rewards Club Chase: Chacun Pour Soi wins at Leopardstown

Chacun Pour Soi oozed class on his way to winning the Grade One Paddy's Rewards Club Chase at Leopardstown.

Always travelling strongly in the hands of Paul Townend, the 4/7 favourite jumped well and cruised clear on the long run from the usual second-last fence (last omitted due to low sun) to score eased down by six and a half lengths.

Willie Mullins' winner was settled in fourth in the very early stages as stablemate Annamix took them along from Henry De Bromhead's pair Put The Kettle On and Notebook.

But Chacun Pour Soi pulled himself into a share of the lead as he and Notebook pressed on midway down the back straight and while the mare Put The Kettle On tried to keep tabs on them, the winner was still on the bridle turning into the straight.

Townend let out an inch of rein and the response was immediate, Chacun Pour Soi, scampering away from runner-up Notebook (7/2), taking the final obstacles in his stride, and powering home to lay down a serious Betway Queen Mother Champion Chase marker.

Paddy Power were suitably impressed and cut the winner to 7/4 from 11/4 for the Cheltenham Festival contest, with Sky Bet making the same alteration to their antepost market.

Sky Bet's Michael Shinners commented: "That was a tremendous performance form Chacun Pour Soi who looked every inch a class two mile chaser. We now make him the 7/4 favourite from 11/4 for the Queen Mother Champion Chase."

Mullins said: “I was really pleased with that. He showed a great spring in his jumping and really attacked his fences. After the last fence, he flew around the final bend and was then idling a bit. His ears were pricked and I’d say he’d plenty in reserve.

“He’ll probably come back here for the Dublin Racing Festival. I hadn’t intended going to Mallow (Cork) with him until I saw what we had left in the John Durkan. It was a good opportunity to go to Mallow and it worked out perfectly and left him just right for today.

“It was frustrating what happened to him at Cheltenham, but these things happen with horses every day.

“We had to pull Klassical Dream out of the beginners’ chase today. I’m hoping it’s just a muscle problem and nothing too serious.”
