Final day report
A final-round 63 saw world number 318 Jim Herman capture his third PGA Tour title with victory at the Wyndham Championship.
The 42-year-old enjoyed a stellar weekend at the Sedgefield Country Club, covering the final 36 holes in just 124 strokes, to reach 21 under and pip former FedEx Cup winner Billy Horschel by a single shot.
Herman and Horschel began the day three off the pace but with overnight leader See Woo Kim two over for his front nine, it opened the door.
Horschel looked like the man to take advantage as he picked up five shots in as many holes, including an eagle on the par-five fifth.
However, missing the ninth green resulted in a bogey to cut his lead to one at the turn.
Up ahead, Herman had posted an eagle, three birdies and a bogey in a four-under front nine and he maintained his momentum coming home with three more birdies in his final six holes.
Horschel birdied 13 and 15 but a bogey at the short 16th put him under pressure but he still had a 15-foot putt at the last to force a play-off but rolled it past.
“Obviously, I’m ecstatic. I’m very emotional. Last summer, winning was just awesome and to prove it again…,” Herman, last season’s Barbasol Championship winner, said in his post-round interview.
“It’s all mental with me. My coach always said I was visually-enhanced but mentally deficient.
“I came here this week with no expectations and after four holes, I’d missed every fairway.”
Day three report
South Korea's Si Woo Kim holds a two-shot lead heading into the final round of the Wyndham Championship after coming agonisingly close to making two holes-in-one on day three at Sedgefield Country Club.
Kim, who won this event in 2016 and the prestigious Players Championship in 2017, holed out with an eight iron on the third hole and amazingly lipped out for another ace on the 12th on his way to a third round of 62 in North Carolina.
The 25-year-old tapped in from 14 inches for birdie on the 12th and picked up three more shots on the 15th, 16th and 17th to finish 18 under par, two shots ahead of Americans Rob Oppenheim and Doc Redman.
Oppenheim, who has a best finish of eighth from his 76 career starts on the PGA Tour, also carded a 62 which included an eagle, seven birdies and a solitary bogey on the last, while Redman returned a 63.
Former FedEx Cup winner Billy Horschel is three shots off the lead following a 65, with Jim Herman and Mark Hubbard on 14 under.
Open champion Shane Lowry was briefly part of a seven-way tie for the lead when he birdied the opening hole, but eventually had to settle for a level-par 70 to remain nine under.
Lowry began the week 131st in the FedEx Cup standings, with only the top 125 on Sunday advancing to the first play-off event, the Northern Trust, next week at TPC Boston.
The 33-year-old is currently projected to climb to 126th in the standings and has already made alternative plans if he does not make the play-offs.
"I've actually got a little trip planned with some friends in Rhode Island next week," Lowry said. "Not that it's a win-win, but at least I have something to look forward to if that doesn't happen. We will play some golf, but not much."
Day two report
Tom Hoge continues to hold a share of the lead going into the weekend of the Wyndham Championship after following up an opening 62 with a 68 on Friday.
American Hoge was level with Harold Varner III at the top of the tree after Thursday and had a steady Friday round to go 10 under for the tournament.
He is joined by South Korean Si Woo Kim – who opened up with nine straight pars before carding five birdies coming back – and compatriots Talor Gooch and Billy Horschel.
The leaderboard at Greensboro remains top-heavy, with the leading pack of four only one shot ahead of a group of five, including British Open champion Shane Lowry.
The Irishman had a round of 63 – including an eagle at the par-five fifth to jump 37 places on the leaderboard.
Paul Casey and Tommy Fleetwood are in a tie for 17th place on seven under while Brooks Koepka and Justin Rose did not make the cut, the American’s round including a triple-bogey on the 10th.
Day one report
Harold Varner III shot an eight-under 62 to share the first-round lead with Tom Hoge and Roger Sloan at the Wyndham Championship.
The American’s eight-birdie, no-bogey round at the Sedgefield Country Club in Greensboro, North Carolina, matched his career best on the PGA Tour and came just hours from his childhood home.
Canada’s Sloan birdied on the 16th and 17th holes and could have moved into an outright lead but failed to sink a 15-foot birdie on the final hole, where Hoge made bogey having needed a birdie-birdie finish to shoot 59.
The trio were two shots ahead of Harris English, our 30/1 headline tip, while Wesley Bryan led a large chasing group in fifth which included former Masters champion Patrick Reed with a five-under 65.
England’s Tom Lewis was five shots back as part of group tied for 25th which included countryman Paul Casey, who tied for second at last week’s US PGA Championship.
Casey started strongly and picked up three shots before the turn and another on the 10th, but had bogeys on the 11th and 12th.
He later had birdies on the 16th and 17th before finishing play with a bogey on the 494-yard 18th.
There were 33 players still on the course when bad weather suspended play.
