It's rare that Roger Varian has a runner at this track but he's dispatched a small raiding party today led by PRETZEL. He made a winning start at Newmarket and his latest second to Muteela looks better in hindsight with the latter scoring at Royal Ascot on Wednesday. He gets the vote given Sir Guy Porteous makes a quick reappearance under a penalty having won a lower grade contest at Hamilton during the week and Goodwood runner-up Homestretch also steps up in class. Braidley was still beaten nine lengths when second at Doncaster while Azagal has been well beaten since scoring over 7f at the latter track.
Pretzel (IRE) 7-2fav (9-0) Tracked winner, ridden over 1f out, hung left to far rail entering final furlong, ran on, held near finish, 2nd of 11, 1/2l behind Muteela (9-4) at Newmarket 1m 3yo hcp 0-90 (3) gd in May.
Braidley (IRE) 11-2 (8-7) In touch, headway over 2f out, soon chasing winner, kept on same pace final furlong, 2nd of 6, 9l behind Wannabe Yours (8-3) at Doncaster 1m 3yo hcp 0-105 (2) sft.
Sir Guy Porteous (IRE) 4-1fav (9-2) Led, headed narrowly 3f, ridden to regain lead over 1f out, stayed on well, won at Hamilton 1m hcp 0-80 (4) gd beating Argaki (9-7) by 1/2l, 10 ran.
Mime Dance 15-2 (8-2) Close up, effort over 1f out, kept on one pace final furlong, 4th of 11, 4l behind Captain Bob (8-9) at Sandown 7f 3yo hcp 0-95 (3) gd.
Homestretch 4-1 (9-7) In touch, headway 3f out, led 2f out, ridden over 1f out, headed inside final furlong, ran on, 2nd of 10, nk behind Rapid Advance (9-5) at Goodwood 1m 3yo hcp 0-80 (4) gd.
Azagal (IRE) 12-1 (9-1) Steadied in rear, headway when not clear run over 2f out, and over 1f out, stayed on inside final furlong, never a threat, 3rd of 6, 15l behind Wannabe Yours (8-3) at Doncaster 1m 3yo hcp 0-105 (2) sft.
Mr Matthews (IRE) 20-1 (9-1) In touch, ridden when weakened final furlong, 10th of 13, 13l behind Agent Murphy (9-4) at Sandown 1m 1f 3yo hcp 0-90 (3) gd.
