Australian Open tennis results: Caroline Wozniacki through to third round clash with Maria Sharapova in Melbourne

Defending champion Caroline Wozniacki eased into a third round clash with Maria Sharapova at the Australian Open with victory over Swede Johanna Larsson.

It was at this stage a year ago that Wozniacki trailed 5-1 in the third set and faced two match points against Jana Fett before pulling off a miracle recovery.

No such heroics were needed this time, the third seed dropping just four games in a 6-1 6-3 defeat that lasted an hour and six minutes.

Maria Sharapova did not get on court until after 11pm for her clash with Swede Rebecca Peterson and wasted little time getting off it again.

The 30th seed is still struggling with shoulder pain but, after beating Harriet Dart 6-0 6-0 in round one, Sharapova dropped only three games against Peterson, winning 6-2 6-1.

That set up a blockbuster third-round clash with Wozniacki, and Sharapova said: "That's a tough third round. There's no secret she loves playing out here. I've set up the challenge and I'll need to go out there and take it."
