Heather Watson progressed to the second round of the Coupe Banque Nationale with a straight-sets victory over fourth seed Monica Niculescu.
The British number three won 7-5 6-3 in two hours and 19 minutes in Quebec City.
Watson edged the opening set, which remained on serve until the Romanian was broken in the 12th and final game.
The 26-year-old raced into a 5-0 lead in the second and, after failing to take advantage of her first four match points, held off a mini fightback to set up a last-16 meeting with the winner of the match between Canadian pair Leylah Fernandez and Gabriela Dabrowski.
