Serena Williams will face Maria Sharapova in the fourth round of the French Open after beating Julia Goerges.

The 36-year-old, three times a winner in Paris, swept aside German 11th seed Goerges 6-3 6-4 in 1 hour 15 minutes.

Williams will meet Sharapova for the 22nd time in their careers - the American leads the head-to-head 19-2 - in a much-anticipated clash on Monday.

They last met in the quarter-final of the 2016 Australian Open, which was defeated Sharapova's last match before a 15-month doping ban.

Williams, meanwhile, is playing her first grand slam since giving birth to her daughter in September.

Garbine Muguruza continued her serene progress with a dominant 6-0 6-2 success against Sam Stosur, while Anett Kontaveit got the better of Petra Kvitova 7-6 (8-6) 7-6 (7-4).

Sloane Stephens fought back to beat Camilia Giorgi 4-6 6-1 8-6 and Lesia Tsurenko saw off Magdaléna Rybarikova 6-2 6-4.

Elise Mertens, the Belgian 16th seed, beat Daria Gavrilova 6-3 6-1.
