Ashleigh Barty breezes into last eight of Wuhan Open


World number one Ashleigh Barty reached the Wuhan Open quarter-finals with a straight-sets win against Sofia Kenin.

Australian Barty, who will retain her number-one ranking following Karolina Pliskova's surprise exit, won 6-3 7-5 against American 15th seed Kenin.

In the last eight Barty will face Petra Martic, who defeated Russian qualifier Veronika Kudermetova 6-3 6-1 in less than an hour.

Ukrainian teenager Dayana Yastremska produced the biggest upset of the day when beating second seed Pliskova 6-1 6-4.

Yastremska will now face the Czech Republic's fifth seed Petra Kvitova, who beat American Sloane Stephens 6-3 6-3.

Former world number one Simona Halep was forced to retire due to a back injury as she trailed Elena Rybakina 5-4 in the first set.

Rybakina will now face Aryna Sabalenka for a place in the semi-finals after the Belarusian upset Holland's sixth seed Kiki Bertens 6-1 7-6 (9).

Ukrainian third seed Elina Svitolina defeated Russia's Svetlana Kuznetsova 6-4 6-2 and American Alison Riske beat Chinese eighth seed Wang Qiang 6-2 6-1.

In the Tashkent Open, Slovakian top seed Viktoria Kuzmova secured a marathon 5-7 6-3 7-6 (7) victory against Belgian Greet Minnen to set up a quarter-final clash with Kristyna Pliskova.

Fifth-seeded Czech Pliskova beat Poland's Katarzyna Kawa 7-5 6-3, while Belgian third seed Alison Van Uytvanck defeated Romania's Monica Niculescu 6-2 6-1.

Romania's eighth seed Sorana Cirstea, France's Pauline Parmentier, Montenegro's Danka Kovinic, Russian Anna Kalinskaya and Katarina Zavatska of Ukraine all reached the last eight.
