The Canadian top seed saved all three break points against his serve as he saw off Portugal's Gastao Elias 6-4 6-3 in a little more than one and a half hours.

And third seed Berdych was only detained for 76 minutes as he reeled off the last seven games in succession to complete a 6-4 6-0 win over French wildcard Gilles Simon.

Second seed Jo-Wilfried Tsonga beat Karen Khachanov of Russia 6-0 6-4 and will next face Georgia's Nikoloz Basilashvili, who beat Nicolas Kicker of Argentina 6-3 6-1.

In the Geneva Open, second seed Kei Nishikori saved three match points before edging past South African Kevin Anderson 2-6 6-4 7-6 (6).

Nishikori rallied from 4-2 down in the decisive tie-break to claim victory and will next face qualifier Mischa Zverev, who beat the United States' Steve Johnson 6-4 7-5.

Top seed Stan Wawrinka was a 4-6 7-5 6-2 winner over Sam Querrey while Russia's Andrey Kuznetsov beat Cedrik-Marcel Stebe of Germany 6-2 1-6 7-5.
