Rafael Nadal took a step closer to defending his Rogers Cup crown with a straight sets win over Guido Pella in Montreal.
Nadal, the top seed, broke his opponent on his first service game and served out for 6-3 inside 45 minutes.
The second set was a more even affair, with Nadal breaking for a 2-1 led but Pella breaking back to make it 3-3.
However, the world number two broke again instantly for a 4-3 advantage and eventually sealed his place in the quarter-finals on his fourth match point 6-3 6-4.
Nadal will face Fabio Fognini after the Italian saw off Adrian Mannarino 6-2 7-5 while fellow Frenchman Richard Gasquet fell to Spain's Roberto Bautista-Agut 7-5 7-5.
Gael Monfils made light work of Hubert Hurkacz 6-4 6-0 in 70 minutes, Alex Zverev saw off Nikoloz Basilashvili in three sets 7-5 5-7 7-6 (5), Canadian Felix Auger-Aliassime went down to Russian Karen Khachanov 6-7 (7) 7-5 6-3, Daniil Medvedev beat Christian Garin 6-3 6-3 and Dominic Thiem was victorious over Marin Cilic 7-6 (7) 6-4.
