Barcelona Open draw: Murray & Nadal in opposite halves

Andy Murray had avoided Rafael Nadal in the draw for next week’s Barcelona Open.

The world number one accepted a wild card into the ATP 500 event on Friday and Saturday’s draw saw him placed in the same half as fourth seed Dominic Thiem – and the opposite one to Nadal.

Murray, who has a bye in round one, will open his title bid against either Bernard Tomic or Dustin Brown.

Should the seedings play out he would then face Feliciano Lopez in the last 16, Roberto Bautista Agut in the quarter-finals and Thiem in the last four.

Nine-time champion Nadal is in the same quarter as Alex Zverev, who he dominated in Monte Carlo earlier this week. The Spaniard will start against either Rogerio Dutra Silva or Renzo Olivo.

He had been seeded to face Kei Nishikori in the semi-finals but the Japanese star withdrew hours after the draw had been made, citing a wrist injury.

He told the tournament's official website: "My right wrist, unfortunately, has not recovered enough to play this week.

"I'm going home (to Florida) with my team to work and get back to the circuit as soon as possible."

Kyle Edmund and Dan Evans are the other Britons in the field.

Edmund will start against Jeremy Chardy, a repeat of their recent Davis Cup clash won in straight sets by the Frenchman. The winner will meet Thiem in round two.

Evans will meet a qualifier in round one as he looks to win his first claycourt match on the ATP World Tour.

Should they both progress to the third round, the British pair will face-off, as they did in Monaco where Edmund won in straight sets.
