Gael Monfils' French Open preparations were dealt a further blow after he suffered a first-round exit at the Open Parc Auvergne-Rhone-Alpes Lyon.
The 31-year-old, a semi-finalist at Roland Garros 10 years ago, has now lost three successive matches heading into the tournament in Paris thanks to Maximilian Marterer's 2-6 6-4 6-4 victory.
It is the second year in a row that Monfils has lost three consecutive matches prior to the French Open, and he still managed to reach the round-of-16.
Fellow Frenchman and fifth seed Adrian Mannarino is also out, having been beaten by Guillermo Garcia-Lopez 6-3 4-6 6-1, but Gilles Simon was able to fly the flag with a straight-sets victory over Jordi Samper-Montana.
Dusan Lajovic, Federico Coria and Roberto Carballes Baena also progressed.
At the Banque Eric Sturdza Geneva Open, Ivo Karlovic lost two tie-breaks in a three-set defeat to Peter Gojowczyk, while Florian Mayer and Marcos Baghdatis were both beaten by qualifiers.
Guido Pella advanced, along with three Americans - Jared Donaldson, Frances Tiafoe and Tennys Sandgren.
