Gael Monfils battles back to beat Cameron Norrie at Zhuhai Championships


Gael Monfils fought back from a set down against Cameron Norrie to reach the quarter-finals of the Zhuhai Championships.

French third seed Monfils came out on top against the British number three to win 5-7 6-3 6-4 in an energy-sapping encounter lasting two hours and seven minutes.

Monfils, who had a bye into the second round, will play Albert Ramos-Vinolas in the last eight after the Spaniard's 7-6 (2) 6-3 win against Serbia's Miomir Kecmanovic.

Eighth seed Ramos-Vinolas saved four set points in the first set as Kecmanovic served while leading 5-4 and 40-0 up.

South Korean qualifier Soonwoo Kwon upset fifth seed Lucas Pouille 7-6 (4) 6-2 in their first-round match and Nick Kyrgios also bowed out at the first hurdle, losing 7-6 (5) 6-1 to Italy's Andreas Seppi.

Kwon will now play Bosnia and Herzegovina qualifier Damir Dzumhur in the second round, while Seppi faces Chinese wild card Zhizhen Zhang.

Andy Murray, who won his first ATP Tour singles match since January on Tuesday when defeating Tennys Sandgren in three sets, plays seventh-seeded Australian Alex de Minaur in his second round match on Thursday.

At the Chengdu Open, Canada's eighth seed Denis Shapovalov served 16 aces in his 6-4 6-3 first-round win against Lithuania's Ricardas Berankis and will next play American qualifier Bradley Klahn.

Portugal's Joao Sousa fought back to beat South Korean wild card Hyeon Chung 1-6 6-3 6-4 and will now face second-seeded Canadian Felix Auger-Aliassime.

Kazakhstan's Alexander Bublik hit 25 aces to edge past sixth-seeded American Taylor Fritz 4-6 7-5 7-5 and he will play Australia's Jordan Thompson, who outlasted Canada's Vasek Pospisil 6-3 3-6 7-5.
