Fabio Fognini apologised after being heard saying in Italian: "I wish a bomb would explode on this club" during his defeat by Tennys Sandgren at Wimbledon.

The volatile Italian is under threat of a two-tournament grand-slam ban after using misogynistic language to a female umpire at the US Open in 2017.

Fognini said: "Most of the time when you're on court, you're frustrated. For sure I was not happy about my performance today because I was knowing I have a lot to win in this case, because I think I have a good chance to win.

"Something happened on court. If somebody feels offended, I say sorry. No problem."
