Novak Djokovic and Stan Wawrinka to return from injury in Abu Dhabi in December

Novak Djokovic and Stan Wawrinka will both make their comebacks from long injury lay-offs in Abu Dhabi at the end of December.

Neither former Grand Slam champion has played since Wimbledon but both have now signed up to play in the Mubadala World Tennis Championship exhibition event in the United Arab Emirates.

The tournament opens the new season and will be played from December 28-30.

The duo join current world number one Rafael Nadal in the a six-man field which also includes Milos Raonic, Dominic Thiem and Pablo Carreno Busta.

Three-time winner Djokovic, who ended his 2017 campaign early due to an elbow injury, said: "The line-up is very strong as always and it will be the perfect way to make my comeback and begin the season."

Meanwhile, Wawrinka revealed he was on track to be fully fit in time for the new season after undergoing knee surgery.

"My recovery is going well and I can’t wait to be back on court," he said. "I’m working hard together with my team and looking forward to being back."

The tournament is widely used as preparation for January's Australian Open, an event for which Djokovic is just a 4/1 shot despite his long lay-off. He is also 8/11 to win any of the four Grand Slam titles in 2018 with Sky Bet.

Wawrinka is 18/1 to regain the Australian crown he won in 2014.

Nadal is the 11/4 favourite ahead of defending champion Roger Federer at 3/1. Andy Murray, another player who has spent a large part of 2017 on the sidelines, is an 11/2 chance.

Murray is due to play an exhibition against Federer in Glasgow next month before making his competitive comeback in Brisbane early in the New Year.
