ATP Tour review: David Goffin wins in Belgium

David Goffin got off to a winning start in his home country as he beat Frances Tiafoe in the second round of the European Open in Antwerp.

Top seed Goffin fought his way through a tie-break in the first set before prevailing 7-6 (7/1) 6-2 against the 19-year-old American wildcard.

The Belgian will face Stefanos Tsitsipas in the quarter-finals after the Greek qualifier beat Ivo Karlovic, and Goffin is just 2/7 to advance with Sky Bet.

Karlovic trailed 7-6 (7/4) 5-6 when he was forced to retire with an ankle problem.

Second seed Jo Wilfried Tsonga is also safely through to the last eight after beating fellow Frenchman Kenny de Schepper 6-4 6-3 while Diego Schwartzman, seeded fourth, also came through in straight sets against Ernesto Escobedo.

It was a happy day for the seeds in Sweden, with all five of those in second-round action at the Intrum Stockholm Open on Thursday prevailing.

Top seed Grigor Dimitrov battled to a 7-5 7-6 (7/5) win against Jerzy Janowicz while second seed Kevin Anderson raced past Chung Hyeon 6-3 6-2.

Juan Martin del Potro saw off Jan-Lennard Struff 6-2 7-6 (7/5), Mischa Zverev was a 6-2 6-3 winner against Viktor Troicki while Yuichi Sugita beat Marcos Baghdatis 6-3 3-6 6-2.

It was a different story in Moscow, with the top two seeds crashing out of the Kremlin Cup.

Defending champion Pablo Carreno Busta suffered a straight-sets defeat to 21-year-old Russian Daniil Medvedev, while fellow Spaniard Albert Ramos-Vinolas lost in three to Alexander Bublik.

Medvedev took just 81 minutes to sweep aside the top seed 6-3 6-3 and reach the last eight, where he will face qualifier Mirza Basic, who saw off Laslo Djere 6-1 6-1.

Bublik prevailed 4-6 7-5 6-2 to set up a meeting with Ricardas Berankis - a winner in three sets against Filip Krajinovic.
