Mark Selby's World Championship title defence is over after he suffered a shock defeat to Joe Perry at the Crucible Theatre.
The defending champion left himself with a mountain climb having lost the opening session 2-7 and although he reduced his arrears to 4-8 in the evening session, Perry kept his cool to seal a historic victory.
Selby looked badly out of sorts in the morning, trailing 0-4 at the mid-session interval as Perry settled in with three 50+ breaks.
The Leicester cueman duly responded by taking the two frames but he wasn't able to take control of the contest as expected and it was Perry who finished the stronger, runs of 59, 84 and a wonderful 109 giving him a four-frame advantage.
Upon resumption, Perry was again fastest out of the blocks and went 8-2 in front before Selby gave himself a glimmer of hope by taking the next two frames.
Another famous Selby fightback wasn't to be, though, as breaks of 76 and 90 saw Perry over finishing line and into the last 16 where he will face either Mark Allen or Liam Highfield.
Since the Crucible theatre became the home of the World Championship in 1977, seven defending champions have lost in the first round.
Stuart Bingham is the most recent to have suffered that fate, losing in 2016 to Ali Carter in his opener.
Ronnie on the ropes
In the afternoon session, Scotland's Steven Maguire confirmed just how dangerous an opponent he can be by taking a 6-3 lead against Ronnie O'Sullivan.
Maguire started the match with a break of 101 and went close to bagging another century in the third frame as he asked a big question of O'Sullivan, seeking his sixth world title.
The Rocket found himself 0-4 down at the mid-session interval before he responded by winning three frames on the spin, the last two won with sublime century breaks.
However, Maguire claimed the final two frames of the session to take a three-frame advantage into the concluding session on Sunday morning.
Wilson and Dott in command
In the day's other matches, Kyren Wilson established a 7-2 lead over Matthew Stevens while Graeme Dott leads Ali Carter 6-3.
