Mark Selby progressed to the second round of the China Championship by overcoming Akani Songsermsawad 5-3 in a tricky opening match.
Selby has endured an indifferent start to the current campaign but made the quarter-finals of the Shanghai Masters recently and will be hoping for another good run this week.
However, the current world number one was made to work hard by the talented Akani who moved into a 2-1 lead when taking frame three before Selby drew level at the mid-session interval.
A break of exactly 100 - the highest of the match - took Selby into the lead for the first time before he took the next to move within touching distance of victory.
Akani dominated the next frame, though, to get back within one before Selby won a tactical eighth frame to get over the line and book his place in round two.
Elsewhere, there were deciding frame victories for Graeme Dott and Yan Bingtao as Stuart Carrington and Chris Wakelin were knocked out while Ryan Day progressed with a 5-1 defeat of Mike Dunn.
Barry Hawkins and Mark Williams were other notable winners on Tuesday.
