Gary Gold signs new Worchester contract

Gary Gold has signed a new contract that will see him remain as Worcester rugby director until at least the end of next season.

The Aviva Premiership club announced a permanent deal for Gold, who has overseen Worcester's vastly-improved form since he joined them in January.

The 49-year-old South African arrived as interim boss, since when Worcester have claimed notable victories over Saracens, Bath and Bristol, collecting 17 points in seven games..

In the process, Warriors moved clear of relegation danger, with Bristol set to make a quickfire Championship return next term.

Gold said: "I have thoroughly enjoyed my first three months at Sixways, and I am delighted to be able to commit to the club on a permanent basis.

"My focus at present is to ensure we finish the season on a high so that we are able to lay the foundations to bring future success to the club."

Gold has previous Premiership coaching experience with London Irish, Newcastle and Bath, while he was also part of South Africa's coaching staff for the 2011 World Cup.

Reflecting on the appointment, Worcester chairman Bill Bolsover said: "We have been pleased with the progress we have made since Gary took over as director of rugby on an interim basis, and the players have really bought in to his rugby philosophy.

"Gary has been able to lead the side to some great results over some very tough opponents, and we believe he will be able to build on his good work to help the club continue to move forward during the 2017-18 campaign."

Worcester continue their Premiership campaign at Newcastle on Friday night, before hosting Leicester during the final day of regular season action on May 6
