Fit and firing Jack Singleton has his eyes set on helping Worcester Warriors out of danger as he makes his long-awaited return to Sixways action.
The Warriors’ first-choice hooker had been out of action since suffering an elbow injury in March, but returned to the bench for the weekend’s 39-17 win against Sale Sharks.
But his return to the field has come at just the right time with the Warriors, with Worcester still firmly in relegation danger.
A win on Sixways soil against Sale at the weekend went go a long way to securing Gallagher Premiership rugby for another year, leaving Singleton in no doubt about what his side need to do for the home faithful.
“We let ourselves down a little bit last week, and the next game is massive for us. Everyone has a tough run in at the bottom of the table and picking up points is going to be invaluable,” said Singleton, speaking at a Gallagher ‘Train with your Heroes’ session at Wolverhampton Rugby Club.
“I just want to concentrate on getting back to full fitness and doing my best for the club.
“Sometimes when we go away from home we don’t always put our best performance out but when you’re at home, that’s what you want to do for the fans.
“It’s always brilliant running out at Sixways, the crowd always get behind you and it should be a good couple of games at the end of the season.
“We’ve always tended to finish a season quite strongly to avoid relegation, and the size of the club, the facilities and the quality of the players means that everyone is fighting to avoid injury.”
From being part of England’s pre-Six Nations warm-up camp in Portugal to suffering ill-timed injuries, the season has already been one littered with ups and downs for Singleton.
But nothing compares to being on the pitch for the 22-year-old, itching to play his part in keeping top-flight rugby at Sixways for another season.
A late-season push could also see Singleton on the plane to Japan for this year’s Rugby World Cup – not that the front row is taking stock of selfish ambitions.
“I’m just looking forward to getting back on the pitch – I just want to help the team in any way I can, whether that’s on the pitch or off it,” he said.
“Being injured isn’t the most fun place to be, I just want to start being back playing rugby.
“Going to Portugal was a massive motivator, every player wants to play for their country and I learnt a lot from the camps.
“Being involved in a Six Nations camp is what you dream of doing, but not being able to play really motivated me to go back to Sixways and work harder and try to fight for a place in the future.”
