Warrington coach Tony Smith believes full-back Stefan Ratchford has been harshly treated after receiving a one-match ban for tripping Wigan's Sam Tomkins.
Ratchford was charged by the Rugby Football League after felling Tomkins off the ball in last Saturday's Ladbrokes Challenge Cup quarter-final loss to the Warriors at the Halliwell Jones Stadium.
Ratchford opted to contest the charge at a disciplinary hearing but failed to prove his case and must now sit out this weekend's clash with Catalans Dragons.
Smith said: "I think Stef was trying block Sam but I don't think he intentionally tripped him. It was the wrong thing to do but I think it was pretty innocuous.
"In 11 years that was Stef's first time in front of the judiciary. I see some regular offenders go along for some pretty cynical stuff and pick up a week or two ban.
"I don't think it makes practical sense but it's for smarter people than me to look at and say whether it's a good system or not.
"It's unfortunate but we've got to serve it out and get on with it."
Warrington announced the signing of New Zealand international utility back Peta Hiku from Penrith Panthers earlier this week.
The 24-year-old is now awaiting a visa but the club hope he will be able to join up with them next week.
Smith said: "It depends on when he lands as to when he'll slot in but we're working towards next week.
"He'll bring a number of things. He's a talented player and has represented his country. He likes to carry the ball and can ask a lot of questions of defences."
