Newcastle Thunder and boss Mick Mantelli part company

Newcastle Thunder boss Mick Mantelli has become the third Kingstone Press League 1 head coach to lose his job in the last fortnight.

The Australian has paid the price for a run of five consecutive defeats, most recently by 22-18 at home to York on Friday which leaves Thunder trailing in 12th place.

A statement from the club said: "Newcastle Thunder and head coach Mick Mantelli have parted company with immediate effect.

"The club would like to place on record its thanks to Mick for all of his work during his time with Newcastle Thunder and wish him all the best for the future."

Newcastle have appointed assistant coach Jason Payne as interim head coach, assisted by head of youth Michael Heap.

Doncaster and Hunslet are also looking for new head coaches after recently parting company with Gary Thornton and James Coyle respectively.
