Leeds Rhinos news: Betfred Super League side sign Matt Prior from Cronulla Sharks as Trent Merrin returns to Australia

Leeds have signed Cronulla Sharks forward Matt Prior on a two-year contract.

The experienced 32-year-old prop had played over 250 matches in the NRL and represented New South Wales in the State of Origin.

The Rhinos also confirmed that Australia international Trent Merrin, their captain last season, has been allowed to leave the club on compassionate grounds to return home to Australia.

Director of rugby Kevin Sinfield said: "We are delighted to have secured a player of Matt's undeniable experience on a two-year contract. He is someone we have looked at for a while and he will be an uncompromising addition to our squad.

"It is disappointing to lose Trent but we fully understand his reasons for returning home. He leaves with our best wishes."
