A review of Friday's action in Super League

It was a busy evening of Super League action on Friday with wins for Leeds, Leigh, Huddersfield, Wigan and Castleford.

Castleford scrum-half Luke Gale was in inspiring form as the Tigers maintained their unbeaten start to the Super League season with a thrilling 30-22 victory over Warrington at the Halliwell Jones stadium.

Gale claimed one try, had a hand in two others and landed three goals as the Tigers showed why many are tipping them to be real Super League challengers in 2017 with this success over last year's beaten Grand Finalists.

Former Man of Steel Zak Hardaker also caught the eye with a try and a spectacular 70-metre break from deep inside his own half to set up Gale's try during an eight-minute purple patch in the first half which saw the Tigers cross for four tries.

Jesse Sene-Lefao and Greg Eden also touched down in a stunning spell of attacking rugby by Daryl Powell's side and the win was secured with a fine second-half try from winger Greg Minikin and Eden's second of the game five minutes from time.

Wigan recovered from a 14-point deficit to beat Widnes 28-26 in a controversially and hastily-rearranged Betfred Super League clash at Widnes.

The newly-crowned world club champions were supposed to host the Vikings on Friday only for the game to be called off following Thursday's storms, and then switched to the Select Security Stadium at short notice.

The circumstances surrounding the initial cancellation are to be investigated by the Rugby Football League, but the Warriors put the issue aside with a thrilling late fightback.

A Wigan win seemed unlikely after the hour, as Widnes led 26-12 after tries from Lloyd White, Danny Craven, Tom Armstrong and Stefan Marsh.

But the visitors hit back with two tries from Joe Burgess, another from Lewis Tierney and a late winner from Oliver Gildart, his second of the night

Leigh Centurions recorded their first victory since winning promotion to Betfred Super League with a hard-fought 24-16 success over St Helens at the Sports Village.

After defeats against Castleford and Leeds, Neil Jukes' side showed tremendous character to upset their illustrious rivals and hung on in front of 9,012 fans.

And it was a former St Helens player - Leigh captain Micky Higham - who grabbed the crucial try 13 minutes from the end.

In trademark style he scooted 20 metres from dummy-half to score by the posts and with Ben Reynolds adding the conversion, the Centurions led 22-10.

Leigh still had to hold off a Saints fightback in the closing stages but they could only muster an Alex Walmsley try with nine minutes remaining.

Acting captain Danny Brough led Huddersfield to a thrilling 24-16 victory over Wakefield and climbed into rugby league's all-time top 10 list of scorers.

The veteran stand-off, leading the Giants in the absence of both skipper Leroy Cudjoe and vice-captain Michael Lawrence, took his points total to 3,440 to leapfrog former Featherstone and York player Steve Quinn in 10th place.

Brough succeeded with only two of his five conversion attempts but was responsible for the decisive moment of an entertaining match when he broke clear nine minutes from the end and produced an inch-perfect kick for England winger Jermaine McGillvary to pounce for the match-winning try and leave Wakefield looking for their first win of the season.

McGillvary's fourth try in three matches completed the fightback for the Giants, who had trailed 16-8 to a livelier Trinity side at half-time.

Liam Sutcliffe came off the bench to score the winning try as Leeds continued their dominance of Salford at Headingley.

Sutcliffe dropped to the bench with Danny McGuire fit to start, and he delivered the best response by landing the telling blow three minutes from time to give the Rhinos a 20-14 victory.
