Canberra sign England stand-off George Williams on three-year deal

Canberra Raiders have confirmed the capture of Wigan's England stand-off George Williams on a three-year contract from 2020.

The Super League champions announced Williams' impending departure on Monday after accepting an undisclosed transfer fee from an undisclosed NRL club.

The Raiders have now confirmed the 24-year-old will link up with his old Wigan team-mates John Bateman and Ryan Sutton, as well as fellow England internationals Elliott Whitehead and Josh Hodgson, under former Kangaroos boss Ricky Stuart.

Raiders chief executive Don Furner said: "The club's had success in recent times in recruiting proven performers from the Super League and we believe George will fit into our system like others have.

"The club would like to wish George all the best for the remainder of the season with Wigan and we look forward to him joining us for pre-season training."

Williams has played 172 Super League matches for the Warriors since making his debut in 2013, including two Super League Grand Final victories in 2016 and 2018.

Wigan say they have secured first option on his services should he return to Super League at the end of his NRL spell.

Williams, who has also won 10 England caps, will join a growing band of Englishmen plying their trade in the NRL.

Leeds centre Kallum Watkins recently joined Gold Coast Titans, while former Rhinos team-mate Ryan Hall is with Sydney Roosters.

The three Burgess brothers, Sam, Tom and George are at South Sydney and England team-mates Gareth Widdop and James Graham are at St George Illawarra, although Widdop will be playing in Super League in 2020 after signing for Warrington.
