Super League: Salford v Widnes team news

Widnes coach Denis Betts is hoping his bottom-of-the-table side can use their morale-boosting win over St Helens to launch them up the Betfred Super League.

The Vikings are five points adrift of the top eight after winning just two of their 11 games in the first half of the regular season but will go to Salford on Sunday in better spirits following their 16-14 success over Saints.

"It's nice to get a win but we know that's not going to solve all our problems," Betts said. "We've got to put a string of games together and be consistent.

"We're looking to build and move forward."

Decimated by injuries at the start of the season, Widnes have been bolstered recently by the return of Joe Mellor, Alex Gerrard and Chris Dean.

Betts is also hoping to welcome back former Wigan prop Eamon O'Carroll on Sunday, along with loose forward Hep Cahill, who has missed the last six matches with a knee injury.

"We've been waiting for good players to come back," Betts said. "It gives us a bit of competition for places. It's nice to get some middles back. Hep is three or four weeks ahead of schedule.

"We've also had a decent turnaround so we've been able to get some energy back into the players."

Betts knows his team will face another stern test from Salford, who are aiming to complete the double following their 46-10 win at the Select Security Stadium in March and are pushing for a top-four spot.

"Look at the quality they've been able to put on the field," Betts said. "They've managed to keep both halves on the field, Gareth O'Brien is playing the best rugby of his career and (Ben) Murdoch-Masila is the form back-rower in the competition. They score plenty of points.

"Our competition with Salford over the last few years has been a highlight, it should be a great contest."

Salford coach Ian Watson brings in Niall Evalds for winger Justin Carney, who has been stood down pending a disciplinary hearing following his dismissal for alleged racial abuse, but hooker Logan Tomkins and stand-off Todd Carney are both back after missing their team's Challenge Cup win over Toronto.

Wakefield have centre Joe Arundel and second rower Matty Ashurst back from injury, while veteran full-back Scott Grix is recalled in place of youngster Max Jowitt as they seek a return to winning ways against Catalans Dragons.

Trinity were within touching distance of the top four after posting three successive wins up to Easter but three consecutive defeats have brought them back into the mix to avoid a relegation battle in the Super 8s Qualifiers.

Catalans, who have influential overseas duo Greg Bird and Krisnan Inu back from injury, are just a point in front after an inconsistent first half of the season.
