Beat Shady McCoy by ½L when gamely taking this contest under Cameron Noble last year (on good to soft); has struggled in competitive races since returning from a five-month break; is also declared to race at Musselburgh on Monday.

Appreciates cut underfoot; 3lb higher than when a decisive winner at Haydock (6f, heavy) in June; was always towards the rear (16th of 22) at York on Saturday; turned out quickly as one of three declared runners for David O'Meara.

No win since scoring at odds of 25-1 at York (6f, soft) in the summer of 2017 - beat Muntadab by a neck; started 6-1f when runner-up in the Ayr Silver Cup last September (2018); disappointing last of 16 on sole start this season.

With John Gosden when winning a Class 2 Ascot handicap (7f, good to soft) from a mark of 107 in September 2017; sold for 34,000gns in November 2018, and now 0-6 (regressive) for David O'Meara in 2019; the handicapper is giving him every chance.

Hit the target from a similar mark at Redcar (7f, good) in June; flattered to deceive when favourite at Ascot (7f, soft) a couple of weeks ago and was surprisingly turned out again there just 24 hours later; perfectly fine on this ground.

Mudlark; twice a winner over this trip at Haydock (heavy) in recent times, including when driven out to beat Sir Busker by ¾L (penultimate); 4lb higher in a stronger race; should be firmly on the premises despite a two-month absence from racing.

Forecast

Finoah (6/4), Raydiance (4/1), Muntadab (11/2), Remarkable (6/1), Al Qahwa (6/1), Cold Stare (10/1)

Verdict

A reasonably competitive Class 2 handicap which is dominated numerically by David O'Meara (responsible for 50% of the field with Cold Stare, Al Qahwa and Remarkable all declared). Meanwhile the 2018 race winner Muntadab (Roger Fell) also holds an entry at Musselburgh 24 hours earlier. Therefore, the safest advice is to wait until firming up an opinion. However, at this stage one could do far worse than plump for the mudlark FINOAH. Twice a winner at Haydock in recent times, he ran well on soft ground at Doncaster latest (fourth) and should be firmly on the premises regardless of the eventual opposition.
  1. Finoah
