Warren Greatrex on his weekend runners at Cheltenham and Hereford

Our columnist feels the early stages will be crucial to his runner in the Caspian Caviar Gold Cup, Keeper Hill. Check out his full weekend guide.

I was very happy with La Bague Au Roi’s run in the Peterborough Chase at Huntingdon last week. She jumped extremely well and showed her usual enthusiasm. It proved that Wetherby was just a temporary blip.

In the end the trip was just too short for her around there but we can move forward from here and if it did dry up a Kempton I’d still consider the Ladbrokes King George VI Chase with her. We would need her favoured ground to go there though and in all likelihood probably won’t get it.

If not we’ll think about plans but there’s a listed mares’ chase at Doncaster on the 29th which is a good pot and we’d take a look at that.

I was delighted to see Martha Brae win at Fontwell on Tuesday. She was green on her hurdling debut in a strong Listed race at Newbury and clearly learned a lot that day. We ran her back quite quickly here but she showed a good attitude and I think she’s quite smart, especially when we step up in trip.

Trio For Rio again showed he stays very well when third at Chepstow. He’ll get any trip and I can see him developing into an Eider Chase horse later in the season. He jumps well and handles very testing ground. I’m happy with how he’s going.

Mulcahys Hill was slightly disappointing in the Randox Health Becher Chase at Aintree. Adrian Heskin felt he probably didn’t take to it as well as he’d have liked. He jumped well but we were always fighting to hold our place a little. He’s come out of it well which is good and we’ll look to find a nice easy novice chase for him in mid-January now to restore his confidence.

Weekend team:

15:40 Cheltenham Friday - Printing Dollars

I was disappointed with her at Kempton last time as I thought she’d run well there but for whatever reason had an off day. She's seemed fine since and has run well around Cheltenham before. The trip will help her and I’d be hopeful she’ll run better than her prices suggest she will.

12:35 Hereford Saturday – Elleon

He’s a very nice horse who won his bumper in good style at Uttoxeter last time. He’s schooled well ahead of his hurdling debut and the two-and-a-half miles here will suit. He’s a horse I like and it will be great to get him going over timber.

13:55 Cheltenham Saturday - Keeper Hill

He won well back over fences at Haydock on his return last month and went up seven pounds for it. Considering the conditions of that race I thought it was fair enough. He came out if very well and has schooled nicely since. He stays this trip very well which is a plus and the key to him is getting into a nice rhythm early. If he does and gets jumping well, he can run a big race.

14:55 Hereford Saturday - North Star Oscar

He’s been a revelation of late and is running consistently well now. Conditions on Saturday should be fine and I think he’s still feasibly treated so would anticipate a bold show.

15:30 Hereford – Saturday Full Spes

He’s a horse I love. He’s quite forward and while I wouldn’t run many three-year-olds in bumpers, he’s working very nicely. The ground will be very soft but he’s French bred and I can’t believe that will be an issue. There aren’t many runners in here and I think he has a very bright future. It’s a nice starting point.
