Jamie Maynard: 5.10 Statehood

This novice stakes looks set to be fought out between the two at the head of the market, Glencadam Master and Statehood. The former, trained by John Gosden, hasn’t been beaten far in two maidens and is now dropped back in trip which could help find some improvement, but it’s the latter who I fancy to prevail.

The Charlie Appleby-trained colt showed a nice turn of foot to wear down On The Warpath on his debut at Lingfield over seven furlongs at the beginning of November and that horse has since won not once, but twice and has an official rating of 92. He has to carry a 7lb penalty for that victory but that looked a pretty hot race and you’d have to think with improvement likely now stepping up to a mile on his second start he’s the one to beat.

Martyn Meade’s Tum Tum may get involved on the back of a good fourth here behind an improver a week ago but it’s the son of Kodiac (who cost 200,000gns as a yearling) who should be too strong for these and can shrug off that 7lb penalty and double up for his strong connections in the hands of Adam Kirby.

Matt Brocklebank: 5.40 Native Appeal

It could be a decent evening for Appleby, who has had plenty of them at Kempton this year. The trainer boasts an excellent 41% win strike-rate at the course (7-17) so far in 2017 and Native Appeal showed more than enough first time out at Wolverhampton to suggest he can pick up a race of this nature before long.

He showed signs of inexperience before running on at the finish when third to fellow Godolphin juvenile Moqarrab at the start of the month and there's a strong suspicion that moving up from seven furlongs to a mile will suit him ideally.

His dam is a half-sister to 1m4f Listed winner Penglai Pavilion so the trip shouldn't be an issue at all and the tongue-strap he wore first time out is retained.

The race seems to revolve around 101 Albishr but there has to be some doubt over the legitimacy of that figure, which he earned from five starts with Richard Hannon. He starts out for Simon Dow and looks well worth opposing as he has to concede weight all round.

Anita Chambers: 6.10 ELTEZAM

Eltezam has yet to strike for Amanda Perrett but his time can come in the ROA/Racing Post Owners' Jackpot Handicap at Kempton. The four-year-old only won once in 10 starts for Richard Hannon but was good enough to finish third in the Coventry and fourth in the July Stakes as a juvenile, so it is easy to see why connections persisted.

However, after falling down the ratings, Eltezam changed hands for 32,000 guineas in July and has managed to place four times in seven starts for Perrett. His recent three-quarter-length second at Chelmsford was a decent effort, especially considering the 10-furlong trip he faced was beyond his ideal.

Switching back to a mile here off a mark of 80, Eltezam has plenty in his favour.
