Barton Knoll can prove an appropriate winner of the Clarke Handicap Chase at Uttoxeter.

The seven-year-old, trained by John Mackie, was bred by the late Lady Clarke - in whose name this two-and-a-half-mile contest is held, along with her husband, the late Sir Stanley Clarke.

The family's association with Uttoxeter goes back a long way, running the racecourse successfully for years and making it a very popular venue.

Barton Knoll, owned by their son Simon Clarke, has run well at the track all three times so far - and tries again on the back of a convincing success at Haydock two weeks ago.

Solomon Grey is fancied to register a second course-and-distance win this month, in the Signal 2 Breakfast With Dave Johnson Novices' Chase.

Dan Skelton's seven-year-old made all to see off solitary rival Black Mischief by 13 lengths when opening his account over fences.

Apart from stumbling badly after the fourth, he jumped well in the main and will have learnt a lot for the experience.

Iron Horse was caught close home and beaten a length and a half by Espalion at Chepstow - but Richard Philips' eight-year-old can gain compensation in the Signal 80's Now On Dab Handicap Hurdle.

Cultram Abbey showed he retains plenty of ability at the age of 12 when successful at Kelso seven weeks ago, and can repeat the trick at the same course in the Ayrton Castle Handicap Chase.

The Nicky Richards-trained gelding seems to reserve his best form for the Borders track, having won there in December and then being pulled up in two races elsewhere before making a triumphant return.

He has been raised 5lb for his latest victory, but appeared to have a bit in hand.

Felix Mendelssohn made a winning debut over fences at Perth earlier this month, and can double up in the KOSB Novices' Handicap Chase.

Running over the bigger obstacles could well be his game, judged by the way he took to them to beat Little Stevie by three and a quarter lengths - having failed to strike over hurdles.

The eight-year-old, trained by Stuart Coltherd, is towards the bottom of the handicap and could have the scope to do better.

Baby King won a four-runner race at Ludlow last time out and faces the same number of rivals in the Ward-Thomas Master Removers Handicap Chase at Fontwell.

The 10-year-old does not seem to mind the tactical element of small fields, also scoring in a three-runner heat at Perth last year. He looks to have been well placed again by his trainer Tom George.

Hermosa can double her Classic tally and get another one in the bag for trainer Aidan O'Brien by landing the Tattersalls Irish 1,000 Guineas at the Curragh.

She may not have been first string in the English equivalent at Newmarket, but was certainly best on the day - and she had the tough task of making all the running.

Hermosa did so in style and can emulate Winter, who won both races two years ago.

Sporting Life tips:

KELSO: 2.00 Valentino Dancer, 2.35 Felix Mendelssohn, 3.05 Nayati, 3.35 Cultram Abbey, 4.05 Petite Ganache, 4.40 Mr Mercurial, 5.15 Kitty Hall.
