Officials at Haydock are hoping the ground will be soft and no worse for the Betfair Chase meeting at Haydock on Saturday.
The going is currently soft at the Merseyside venue after 10 millimetres of rain fell on Monday night and clerk of the course Kirkland Tellwright is expecting a similar amount before race day.
Should that be the case, then the ground should not have deteriorated by race day.
Tellwright said: "We had 10 millimetres of rain on Monday night and there's probably an other 10mm to come.
"We're certain to be soft on Saturday. I'm just hoping it doesn't get to heavy.
"Today and tomorrow are wet with just the odd scattered shower from Thursday onwards.
"We've no worries on the temperature front. It's pretty mild. This time of year it all happens so slowly. Once it's soft, it's going to stay soft."
Bristol De Mai, a soft-ground lover and impressive course winner, is Sky Bet's 6/4 favourite for the Betfair Chase, ahead of Cheltenham Gold Cup winner Sizing John at 5/2.
