Kameko - up in trip for the Investec Derby
Kameko - up in trip for the Investec Derby

Simon Holt best bets for Goodwood on Wednesday

Our pundit has four fancies on Wednesday's card at Goodwood including Kameko in the feature Qatar Sussex Stakes.

Recommended bets:

1pt win Be More in 1.10 Goodwood at 6/1

1pt win True Destiny 1.45 Goodwood at 5/1

1pt win Kameko in 3.15 Goodwood at 11/2

1pt win Arigato in 4.20 Goodwood at 8/1

AS so often, Wednesday's Qatar Sussex Stakes promises to be the race of the week at Goodwood's Festival meeting and, in an intriguing line-up which features two Classic winners, KAMEKO is given narrow preference.

The 2000 Guineas winner, who beat the re-opposing Wichita by a neck at Newmarket (with Pinatubo third), could finish only fourth in the Derby earlier in the month but he should be much more at home returning to a mile.

On pedigree, there was always a question mark whether Kameko would get the trip at Epsom and, while he battled home well enough, there was none of the sparkle he produced on his previous start or, indeed, when storming to victory in the Vertem Futurity at Newcastle last November.

Long held in the highest regard by trainer Andrew Balding, the son of Kitten's Joy may have a small form edge over Siskin who maintained his unbeaten record in a slowly-run Irish 2000 Guineas in which he beat the re-opposing Vatican City (eighth in the Derby) and Lope Y Fernandez who has since dropped back in trip.

Last year's runner-up Circus Maximus is a redoubtable battler as he proved again when winning the Queen Anne Stakes at Royal Ascot, and Ryan Moore takes the mount in preference to Wichita, while the highly-rated Mohaather (unlucky in the Queen Anne) produced a tremendous turn of foot to slam San Donato by nearly four lengths in the Summer Mile.

This is a step up in class from that Ascot performance for Mohaather but he certainly looks worthy of it in what should be a thrilling contest.

In the opening British Stallion Studs EBF Fillies Handicap, Balding could also strike with the improving BE MORE who travelled strongly to beat Asiaaf on her first try over this trip at Sandown.

The runner-up, a good second again on Tuesday, had been an impressive winner on this course previously yet Oisin Murphy never had to get too serious with the selection who should confirm the placings with fourth-placed Dean Street Doll, even on slightly altered terms.

Another positive is that Be More won here at Goodwood last June (1m soft) and the daughter of Shamardal has a nice way of going.

In the Unibet You're On Goodwood Handicap, TRUE DESTINY is taken to improve on his third place last year over this extreme distance (2m4f) which clearly suits him well.

Trained by in-form Roger Charlton, the five-year-old is 4lb higher in the ratings since chasing home Timoshenko here 12 months ago when finishing strongly, and has run two solid races so far this season over just two miles.

True Destiny has continued to improve in each of the last three seasons and looks ready to win a decent prize such as this.

Newmarket trainer William Jarvis enjoyed a notable success with Lady Bowthorpe at Ascot on Sunday, and can strike again with the in-form ARIGATO in the concluding Theo Fennell Handicap.

With a big field taking part over the turning seven furlongs, a low draw and luck in running could be essential and, from stall one, the selection will cover less ground than many others.

Josephine Gordon will need to find daylight in the home straight but, with a clear run, Arigato must surely go close having thrived since being dropped in trip this season during which he has won twice on the Rowley Mile course at Newmarket before finishing a creditable fourth behind Motakhayyel and Sir Busker last time in the Bunbury Cup on the July Course.

The first two home, both winners at Royal Ascot previously, represent really solid form and Arigato would have got a bit closer to them but for being bumped approaching the final furlong.
