Sea Wall wins for Chris Gordon at Plumpton

Chris Gordon's stable advertised the ups and downs of racing in a 24-hour period after the success of Sea Wall at Plumpton.

On Sunday, yard favourite The Chuckmeister had to be put down at Southwell to leave his stable lass Maisie Grainger in despair.

But the Gordon team were at least able to smile again after Tom Cannon made all the running on 3/1 joint-favourite Sea Wall to win the two-mile handicap hurdle by two and a quarter lengths from Camron De Chaillac.

"We had an awful day at Southwell when we lost one of our old warriors, so this is a little bit of a pick-me-up," said Hampshire-based Gordon.

"When you have 33 or 34 in training like us you do get attached. His lass, Maisie, also looks after this one so it's nice for her."

Cannon said: "I got him in a good rhythm out in front and he did it nicely.

"He's had problems, so in the past we've always dropped him in but he's a horse that either finishes first or last and it worked out well."

Tom O'Brien rode a treble, initiated when Cigarisi justified cramped odds of 1/3 in the opening maiden hurdle for Philip Hobbs.

"He didn't really enjoy the ground but he picked up in the home straight," said O'Brien.

Mike Roberts' Snippetydoodah (4/1) was then a seven-length winner of the mares' handicap hurdle under the same jockey.

"She likes her own way a bit and she handles the ground so it was an ideal little race and great placing by her trainer," said O'Brien.

"I kept the revs going to the last because she'd have probably stopped if I'd let her!"

Minella Gathering was then a hard-fought winner of the three-mile handicap hurdle for Paul Henderson.

Backers of 7/4 favourite City Supreme were left owing Noel Fehily a drink after he managed to collar Mr Fitzroy right on the line in the Peter Earl Memorial Chase.

"I thought the other horse was going to go away from me but I didn't think for a second I was going to get there," Fehily told At The Races.

"He's been running well over three miles so stepping back up will definitely suit."
